SAP stands for substance abuse professional. This individual is a certified or qualified person that has knowledge of alcohol and substance abuse but also has knowledge of DOT drug and alcohol testing. DOT SAP Facts You Need to Know
A substance abuse professional works with employees who have violated a DOT drug and substance abuse program. Employees may have tested positive on pre-employment tests, random drug tests, or reasonable cause for suspicion tests. They evaluate these employees and determine the appropriate treatment, follow-up, education, and after-care treatment for these employees. A substance abuse professional’s job is to guide you through the program when you have tested positive for a drug and substance abuse test. They do this according to the DOT SAP guidelines. This individual is the only one that may return you to your position or duty. Alternatively, they may request further education, treatment, or counseling for individuals who test positive.
