Tungsten, as you may know, is a metal. While it wasn’t used in various industry applications until the 1930s, tungsten was first discovered in 1781. This metal only appears naturally in proximity to calcium, iron, or manganese, which makes it a very valuable metal. Tungsten is located within the Earth’s crust, and It is currently believed there are just 1.25 grams of tungsten for every 1,000 kilograms.

Tungsten’s Properties

Each type of metal has its own inherent properties, and tungsten is an intriguing metal. In its pure form, for instance, it has the following properties:

  • The highest melting point
  • The highest tensile strength
  • The lowest vapor pressure

It’s important to note that tungsten melts at 6,170 degrees Fahrenheit, and has a tensile strength of 1,510 megapascals. It is also over twice as dense as steel. Tungsten carbide, for example, is listed on the Moh’s hardness scale between 8.5 and 9.0. This places tungsten just behind diamonds, which are considered to be the hardest substance currently known. Diamonds are located on the Moh’s hardness scale at ten.

Purposes for Tungsten

Given the properties listed above, tungsten crucibles are used for a variety of purposes. Given their versatility, tungsten crucibles are instrumental for product design and manufacturing, particularly within the electronics industry. Tungsten crucibles are also utilized as heating elements for induction furnaces, metal smelting, and other important applications. It’s also interesting to note that tungsten crucibles have the capacity to melt rare earth metals as well.
